coComment V2 Beta update

August 3rd, 2007

As some of you may have noticed, when we transitioned to coComment V2 Beta, we encountered some technical issues, not too uncommon for major product updates like this one. In an effort to eliminate as many issues as possible, we did a private beta test program first. However, as this is a major new update, it was impossible to test all possible combinations prior to launch. We could have waited longer to release V2 Beta, but we felt that our users would benefit more from getting a significanlty improved product sooner rather than later.

With that, we are working very hard to solve any of the existing issues and make the service as error-free as possible. As some of the potential bugs may have not been detected yet, and we WANT to hear about any problems, comments, issues that you may be experiencing. This is precisely why we released a Beta version of the product. Please feel free to send you feedback to info@cocomment.com and we WILL respond promptly to resolve them.

Thank you for your understanding!

I noticed there was a new update on the firefox extension- does that fix the Google Analytics incompatibility? (it kept my date selection from working in GA)

  2. Asa Dotzler Says:

Please update the extension with a preference to turn off the floating toolbar thing. It’s breaking enough pages that I’ve had to disable the entire extension and revert to the farr less useful bookmarklet. Also, the extension’s little menu next to the close button is a pain, it expands on mouse-over covering the close button. That should be an on click not an on hover or something.

  3. Lisa Lopacinski Says:

Every time I try to leave a comment on a blog, especially Blogger, but also wordpress, I get a CO Comment error and it won’t post my post.

I can’t even figure out how to turn of, disable, or uninstall CO Comment so that I can post comments.

  4. Pete Says:

Yeah, the new extension isn’t letting me comment on blogger or 20six unless i turn it off.

Lisa, you should be able to post if you use the ‘x’ on the far right of the bar to turn off CoCo.

  5. Elaine Says:

Wow. This just totally breaks cocomment for me, and I can’t comment at all now. I’ll check back in a month or two to see if it is working for me by then.

  6. Arun Says:

Sorry to rain on you guys with more negative comments but the earlier web interface was much better. It was snappier to use.

Right now the Firefox addin just doesn’t work (and I’ve disabled it).

Also the comment bar that appears is harder to use. Does (-)Track mean that the conversation is not being tracked? Or do I have to click the minus to stop tracking? Likewise with the (+)Share. May be it’s just me but the checkbox was a better UI paradigm.

I really like CoComment and I hope you can work out the issues with this V2 beta.

  7. hubs Says:

this may be in bad form, but it looks like it’s time to test out www.sezwho.com

  8. Andrew B Says:

Any news on progress fixing coComment? It seems to be broken now. As Lisa Lopacinski says, on several blogs, including this one, it is necessary to disable coComment in order to post a comment. That is probably why there are so few comments here.

It then proves impossible to subsequently get the comment into my collection. So I have no way of keeping my comments collection complete.

By the way, this is the second time I typed this comment. The first time something crashed when I posted it and I finished up back at the coComment homepage. So here’s hoping for the second attempt ….
Furthermore, the display of my comments in the sidebar of my blog has changed. It does not look pretty. Will I have to do work to fix it?

And I now seem to have an java driven (I guess) toolbar floating around at the top of the page. Do I want that? Why do I need that? If every addon or plugin creates its own floating toolbar I will go crazy and start to wonder what was wrong with good old straightforward HTML.

  9. hAmid reZa Says:

A small question: I used rss output of my comments (http://www.cocomment.com/rss2/MyUserName.rss) to build a special page for my cocomments on my blog. Do these new changes mean that I must change my rss address in code? I know that this thing works for now but will it work also in the future?
After that … What is this blue square you are embeding in each page? I do not like that thing. How can it be thrown out?

  10. nicolas Says:

@hamid, yes your rss will continue to work and sorry for the blue square, we will remove it soon, it was not supposed to appear in all these contexts. All together we are working on bringing back what you all asked.

  11. Charles Frith Says:

Talk about fixing something that wasn’t broke. Its slow and erratic now. You’ve also put a blue square on my page which apart from not always working is pretty much a violation of my web space. Why you people figure you can slap your buttons anywhere without asking is beyond me. In addition the old firefox cocomment button doesn’t work. I’m guessing that there is way too much ego invested in this project to go back to what worked fine. I’m on the lookout for something new. It was nice knowing you.

  12. papo Says:

Really guys, that was so..not nice! I have also removed the plugin. I like the new look by the way of the page. Anyway I know its difficult times, especially after an not so successful update, but I will subscribe to this blog and wait for more updates. I think it is going to improve…..everybody deserves a second chance…its a free service after all!

  13. Richard Says:

I guess I picked a bad time to set up my Cocomment integration with Technorati. I follow the instructions carefully and, when I hit submit to integrate, it takes me to a help page? ?? So I go back and hit “step 7″ manually but then nothing happens. I ask Technorati to release the spiders but of course cocomment isn’t set up for that.

Can anybody recommend another service, similar to Cocomment? I don’t have anything invested in Cocomment yet, so it’s easy enough for me to start somewhere else.

  14. hamid reza Says:

    Thanks nicolas for your response!
I do not want to be negative, I know that I you are trying hard to create a better service and every negative comment might be somehow depressing and … .
But I have several problems with new CoComment (a service which I use for a long time and love its features and capabilities), I use a 800×600 resolution on my 17″ monitor and overall site layout is broken for me. I know that this might be my own problem (nearly everyone is using better resolutions) but I think you must have considerations for a not ignorable percentage of internet users (I think it might be something between 10 to 20 percent of users, you might want to consult large analytics service providers for an accurate number).
I really loved the old CoComment, the new one is somehow obfuscating for me! I could find out what of my conversations got a new comment by only one look and read only newly added comments by only one click. But in the new design I am a little bit (even more than a little bit) confused and do not know how to do that.
However thanks for your great service and product, I hope that you can make it better and more lovable!

  15. John Says:

The FF plugin gives me problems in flickr, lots of slow script messages. Mac 10.4.10 and makes some embedded content disappear on blogs (voicethread.com slideshows).

  16. Jazza Says:

yeah, the FF extension is causing me problems as well, just like John. Keep getting the “do you want to stop the script” box appear on Flickr. To solve it, I just disabled the add-on. Although, it’s still seems to be working, as I type this, I’ve got the box under the input box, and the blue box top right.

  17. Peter Says:

FF extension is killing me too, I’ve disabled it now, although that doesn’t always help as like Jazza I have a blue box top corner of this page. I hate to be negative as I love the service, but if it’s going to slow down our users (whom I encouraged to get CoCo with the firefox plugin) then I’m going to have to think about having it removed from all of our sites, which is upwards of a million bloggers. I’ve not done so as of yet, but if coco isn’t going to work then I have to explain to our users why I encouraged them all to get it and got the variables built into all of our templates. I’m sorry to seem like I’m over reacting, but it’s clearly no longer functioning anything near right, and if it’s slowing our pages down for anyone who has the plug-in (and who may not think to remove it) then I’ll have no option. Could I possibly have some feedback as to when coCo is going to function again?

  18. moby Says:

I don’t think I’ve ever been so disappointed w/a newer version of anything. It does nothing but break. Please offer a rollback version until you get this one corrected. I’ve had to completely uninstall it from all my machines.

    XP and Vista same problems

  19. acrv Says:

“We could have waited longer to release V2 Beta, but we felt that our users would benefit more from getting a significantly improved product sooner rather than later.”

Unfortunately, it is no benefit so far, just the reverse, and I have to agree with the negative reports that you received. I posted this only to give more weight to the critics and so to determine you to make this service useful again.

    Thanks.

  20. plozen Says:

I’m using Blogsphere to run a Lotus Notes blog, and since the upgrade, our comments have not worked, they time out every time. If we disable cocomment, then the comments will not show up on the web. Needless to say, it was working perfect before.

  21. Andrew B Says:

I had an e-mail from coComment support saying they had fixed the Firefox plugin and I should re-instal it.

I have now done so and everything seems to be working nicely again.

    Thanks for the support!

  22. Matt Says:

    Hi guys.

We have reverted the extension to the previous version, mostly, and this should resolve all the outstanding issues with site integration. If you still find any, please let us know urgently.

We have also discovered, and fixed, a database corruption issue that was impacting the ability to retrieve and store comments.

I’m very sorry that the launch has not gone anything like as smoothly as we would have wished but trust you will at least accept our good intentions and willingness to listen and respond quickly.

We are now going to focus on getting the rest of the issues resolved and, in response to requests, allow you to choose which version of the extension to use depending on your requirements.

    Best regards,

    Matt (coComment CEO)

  23. Asa Dotzler Says:

When you rev your extension, please rev the version number. Apparently the new version has the same version as the previous buggy one and that makes it difficult to know whether or not a user has the right one. Thanks.

  24. papo Says:

It must be the old one..I cant see the blue square on the upper right corner of firefox..I guess its the old one!

  25. Asa Dotzler Says:

papo, I suggest you uninstall the extension you have now, restart Firefox, and then install the version they’re offering. That should result in your having the latest version.

  26. Peter Says:

    Thanks, Matt, appreciated!

  27. lec Says:

Actually, there is no need to re-install the extension as the version of the client is selected from the server.
But you might need to clean your browser cache to get the correct version of the client.

    Christophe

  28. John Cass Says:

I really do not like the upgrade. you have to go through the extra step of clicking through to see all of the comment. Though typically in my comments only the two 3-5 were new comments anyway. However, how do I determine if a new comment is on a comment thread, the comments are no longer in bold.

  30. Frederic Says:

Is cocomment working with Dotclear blogs? I don’t understand but on my side it doesn’t seem to work…

  31. Kristen Says:

well…everyone is being such a downer. I’ll just be the peanut gallery and say that you guys surely are working hard.

  32. jose Says:

Hi there! In the old version there was a link called “Comments” where I could see all my comments with their dates. I can´t find it now, is this option available in the new version?. If not, I would be very glad if you can add it. Thanks for your effort. José

  33. lec Says:

    Hi Jose,

/comments now point to your page containing the last 5 unread active conversations as well as information about your community.
To get only your conversations, please go to http://www.cocomment.com/myConversations

    Christophe

  34. Pete Says:

Hi, Sasha has already fixed this for me once, but now three thousand of my comments are gone again. Please can this be sorted out, or can I at least know why I can no longer track 3000 comments I’d made? A lot of those conversations were work related so being able to track them was very useful.

  35. Pete Says:

p.s, well done on the hardwork, I’m sure it’ll all be worth it once its running right!

  36. lec Says:

@Pete: sorry for this. We will fix it ASAP.
However, only the comment count is wrong: your comments and conversations are still there and accessible.

    Best regards
    Christophe

  37. jose Says:

Hi Christophe, thanks for your answer. I dont want to see my conversations, only my comments, ordered by date. Its a pity that the “Comments” option was disabled.

    Thanks,
    José

  38. David G Says:

    Guys -

I love(d) cocomment and have recommended your service to hundreds of people so I have to let you know - this redesign is far less usable than your prior product was. The short page is by far my biggest irritation but generally my discussions seem more difficult to find and the screen is now cluttered with a bunch of content I’m not interested in.

So, I’ve started to look for a tool to replace cocomment. What I’ve found is that your competitors products look and feel a lot like your redesign - and are equally clumsy to use.

Comment marketing and reputation management are about to explode online - and you used to have the best tool in that space. Please consider bringing it back.

  39. matt Says:

    Hi David.

That’s what we’re trying to do. We’ve changed what we can, quickly, and are looking at all the rest right now.

Please bear with us … we see the opportunity and want to be able to offer something extraordinary. Unfortunately, we seem to have taken a wrong turn in our journey but we are learning from it and the Final Version 2.0 coComment will be the better product for it.

    Cheers,

    Matt (coComment CEO)

  40. David Says:

    Hi all,

It looks like you guys have been bulking up on capacity, which is great. There are bugs, but I assume they’ll be worked out. As someone who doesn’t use one of the standard blogging platforms, I appreciate how easy you’ve made integration of cocomment. Just keep plugging along, and I think you’ll have a great product.

  41. David G Says:

    Matt -

Thank you - that’s good enough for me - I’m going to stick around. I’m invested here (at least my time and my reputation are) and your competition is not (yet) compelling enough to switch. Good luck with your next steps.
