Integration Page Updated

September 18th, 2006

Here we are! The page explaining how to integrate coComment into your blog has just been updated. You’ll see some changes in the javascript integration code — but not to worry, the old code still works.

Let me take this occasion to clarify again what this whole “integration” thing is about. When coComment captures comments left on blogs, it needs to catch all sorts of information: blog name and URL, comment author’s name, comment content, etc. Clicking on the bookmarklet or using the extension tells coComment to do that.

When coComment is integrated into a blog, two things happen:

  • the different variables coComment needs are given to it directly
  • coComment is given the power to catch the comments.

Consequence: if you integrate coComment into your blog, coComment will have the correct data (blog and post names, etc.) and will know to capture the comments made on it, be they by coComment users or other people.

If you don’t integrate coComment into your blog, then we still try and catch the comments (if a coComment user requests it by posting in the thread or simply choosing to track it) with the coCo-crawler. This is, however, a less precise way of capturing comments for the moment.

This is probably a support forum subject, but I wanted to point out two major issues that are keeping lots of users out of coComent:

.- Comments on your blog not appearing on coComent (my case) -> Integration issue
.- Comments you spread on other blogs not appearing on coComent –> Again, possibly integration issue.

I think you guys should focus on this strategical matter. I own a Wordpress site with a custom theme and it seems impossible to have coComent working, even when I consider myself a mid to advanced CSS / PHP / Javascript user…

Best regards and best luck from Spain,

    Ángel M.

What is keeping you from adding the integration code to your custom theme?

  3. angelm Says:

Probably I didn’t explain myself properly.

I’ve added both the old and the new style integration code (I mean, the “var” code and the “coco={…}” code. None of them is working for me. I’ve troubleshooted all through the meaning of every variable, and nothing seems to work for me. It happens that my custom theme changes the names of Wordpress’ default form name, textare name and submit button, but even changing the code to point to this fields I can’t make my blog comments appear on coComent. I’m working with some people in the forum and with the theme author himself, and still can’t make it work. That’s why I mean you have to make it even simpler if you want non technical users to join coComent, wich I find to be as useful as my RSS reader !

    Regards,

    Angel M.

Well, if the field names are changed, then that makes it very difficult for ANY service to identify that it’s a comment form. You see, there has to be something we can rely on to identify that we are dealing with a comment form. Probably Mocha can tell you which field names to use so that coComment recognises your form.

It looks like it’s working fine now, right? Or what is the problem that still remains?

Sorry about the error on the integrate page… we are fixing it. And thank you for pointing it out!

  6. angelm Says:

Nope…It’s not working at all. Please, feel free to make any comment on my site to track the bug, as I am using the new code, pointing out and identifying every field name and still the comments you make on my blog won’t appear on coComent. That’s what I was trying to show Stephanie: I’ve identified the field names with your integration code, and still is not working. I consider myself competent in both CSS, JS and PHP, so it would be very difficult for a non technical user to make this work out if their wordpress or blog tool flavour differs from the “vanilla” instalation…

    Just testing….
