Automatic-mode for Internet Explorer, Safari, Opera and Epiphany

Friday, July 28th, 2006

Those of you using the new Firefox extension may have noticed, it does a beautiful job at continuously learning from its user base about pages and comment forms where it should auto-enable coComment.

This same automatic-mode can now also be leveraged as a user script. Combine that with the bookmarklet and you get almost the same functionality that the extension provides for Firefox, Flock, SeaMonkey and Netscape in other browsers such as Opera, Safari (using Creammonkey), Internet Explorer (using Trixie) or Epiphany.

ILoveJackDaniels already reports it to be working in Opera and I have tested it in Safari with Creammonkey.

Let us know what your experiences are in these and other user script environments!

Worldwide reviews

We are getting reviews from all over the world. Hopefully they are positive (sometimes it is a bit hard to tell!). Do you speak Korean, Dutch or Chinese? Here are a few links:

  • coComment

Loren Feldman made a video review of coComment on 1938 media. We’re happy to be named a “pretty cool tool”! Thanks for the feedback Loren (and nice tee shirt you have by the way ;-)

Loren Feldman: “This solves a problem. This extents the dialog. This makes your life easier.”

Matt also pointed us to the Hobson & Holtz podcast who is also talking about our relaunch in their July episode (around 09:47). Download it here!

New extension for Firefox and Flock

Sunday, July 23rd, 2006

For the last few hours I’ve been using an updated extension that fixes some problems we have spotted over the weekend. We will make the formal release tomorrow, but I wanted you to be able to grab it already and have uploaded it to our servers.

The updated extension contains the following fixes:

  • The status bar icon now links again to your conversations page. There previously was no direct and quick way to access that anymore.
  • When there is a conversation for a page, which is not visible on the page itself, the toolbar button now shows the correct status by turning orange
  • The toolbar button settings are now correctly persisted across browser sessions. Users that prefer to combine the bookmarklet with the extension no longer get a reappearing toolbar button when restarting the browser.

I know some of you have been waiting for these improvements. So, now you no longer have to wait :-)

UPDATE (July 25th, 2006): A new version has now been formally released

What’s new?

Thursday, July 20th, 2006

The new coComment is here, and it brings a LOT of improvements to the existing service. We will detail each feature in future posts, but here is an overview of what’s new:

  • THE COCOCRAWLER
The coCoCrawler has arrived, and will keep an eye on your conversations for you. Remember when coComment would inform you of new comments only when they were made by other users of the system? It’s over now, the most requested feature is up and running (it actually has been running in hidden mode for a month) so don’t be surprised to find many new comments in your conversations.
  • TRACK THIS CONVERSATION
Another heavily requested feature: you can now track conversations even if you don’t participate! Simply check the appropriate box after coComment has been activated. The conversation will appear in your page and be followed by our crawler.
  • META CONVERSATION
Want to comment on a web page that has no built-in comment functionality? Now you can activate coComment on any webpage, and create a comment which will trackable in your conversations on the coComment service. If anyone else comments on that page, you’ll be able to monitor the conversation - as you would on a comment enabled website. Now you can start conversations everywhere!
  • NEW INTERFACE, SITE STRUCTURE AND NAVIGATION
With help of the great usability specialists Namahn, we have reorganized and simplified the site. A new homepage will facilitate login and registration, a new navigation allows easy access to your conversations, community, and tools.
  • TRY THE SERVICE WITHOUT REGISTERING
If you want to give coComment a spin without signing up, a temporary cookie will be set on your browser - without you having to give any information.
  • FILTERING OF CONVERSATIONS
Filter your conversations by type. See what you said on blogs, on media sites, in forums, choose how your conversations will be displayed.
  • AND TONS OF OTHER FEATURES
Five languages available (English, French, German, Italian and Spanish), more capture-compatible platforms (most notably YouTube!), add people or sites as favorites, send coComment invitations, customize your page (try to drag and drop the boxes on the right of the screen!), and much more!

A lot of new things for you :-) We hope you enjoy the new coComment, happy conversations folks! We’re glad to see our top commenter already likes the new features!

Empty your cache please

Thursday, July 20th, 2006

Some users reported problems with their blogs, most notably the comments being sent to coComment and not to their site.

This behavior is due to your browser not getting the latest version of our code. Please empty your cache and reload the pages, everything should be fine!

On firefox:

  • Go to Preferences (Mac) or Options (PC)
  • Click on the Privacy Tab
  • Click on the Cache Tab
  • Clear on the Clear cache now button

For Internet Explorer

  • Go to Internet Options in the Tools menu
  • Click on the Delete files button

If your cache is fine you should see the new cocobar as shown on the screenshot below:

The new cocobar

Scheduled downtime

Thursday, July 20th, 2006

We will take the servers down for a few minutes between 11am and noon today (Geneva, Paris, Berlin, Madrid time). Sorry for the inconvenience, and watch out for the new coComment!

Firefox Extension Can Work With Flock

Saturday, July 15th, 2006

Good news for all you Flock users out there (for those who don’t know Flock, you should try it now, it’s great): the magic Firefox extension which lets you forget coComment exists as it silently records all your comments can be made to work with Flock.

The bad news is that it took me until now to realize that (I’m an avid Flock user and have been frustrated by the extension incompatibility for weeks, if not months).

The good news is that it’s dead easy: install the Flock coComment extension now!

A small word of caution, though, or two:

  1. I’ve been using this extension for a few days and it seems to work, but it hasn’t been extensively tested by the coCo-team. If you’re geeky enough to understand how converting an extension really works, be kind to leave a comment and let us know if there seems to be any risk of breakage.
  2. The Flock extension I’ve linked to is one particular version of the extension. Within the next weeks (or so I heard!) there will be a new release of the extension, and the link above will still point to the old extension (still with me?) I’ve also been told the Flock conversion may not be necessary anymore… let’s keep our fingers crossed and our eyes open.
