DNS Problems (Now Solved)
We currently face massive DNS problems to www.cocomment.com. We are currently hosting our DNS as joker.com and they issued the following statement
Joker.com currently experiences massive distributed denial of service attacks against nameservers.
This affects DNS resolution of Joker.com itself, and also domains which make use of Joker.com nameservers.
We are very sorry for this issue, but we are working hard for a permanent solution.
Thank you for your understanding.
Unfortunately, we are also affected by this and cocomment.com is thus often not reachable from various locations. We are currently trying to move our DNS to another hoster, but that unfortunately takes time and as joker is quite busy it’s probably even harder than usual.
We are really sorry about this and apologize for any inconvenience you encounter. We hope the situation goes back to normal soon.
(The problems are now solved and we should not have these problems any more).

Posting this on the site that can’t be reached does not do much to help communicate your problems to us your user community. Why not send an email? You have our email addresses.
I like the service you provide and while this is the first time I have seen a service interruption, unfortunately, in this tech world, it is probably not going to be the last. Consider an email notification to your user community. Or a press release, or any number of ways of getting the word out that (1) there is a problem, (2) you are aware of it. That will be more acceptable than silence. Thanks!

Of course you are right. The site was not unreachable from everywhere thus I though better to write something here than doing nothing. At least some people might have been able to see it.
Sending an email would have been an option, but we don’t want to send people mail they might percieve as spam. Maybe in this case it might have been acceptable (feel free to tell us if this is ok for you or not).
We absolutely have to make sure that we have another channel to get information out about problems like this. We were a bit surprised by the events ourselves. First, it did work from our own computers most of the time, but we noticed that there are problems. It took us quite some time till we found out where the problem lies, joker really was not help there, as they never even bothered to inform us about the problem. After knowing what happened, we tried to move the DNS to another server as soon as possible, but because of the chaos at joker, we were not able to do that for quite some time.
We are really sorry about this and we will try to improve our communication strategy to make sure that we at least can communicate about the problems to our users. Because the DNS itself is not in our control, we can’t do much to improve the situation there.

i’m with steve. i was wondering why i wasn’t able to access cocomment from various terminals. if i hadn’t had logged in to see the announcement in the sidebar i would have assumed the worst. i was almost tempted to jump ship after being completely in the dark.

Frankly, I was quite happy to wait and actually have to side with Merlin here. DNS errors can and do happen. It was just over a day—and that, to me, is not going to affect commenting which is a hobby. If it were my livelihood, then I would panic.

It would be nice if your team blog was hosted at a different company than the main site. It’ll cost you guys a few bucks and shared hosting should be more than adequate. This will give you the necessary redundancy for your user community. Also a standard URL like cocommentnews.com or cocomment-alerts.com, etc pointing to the team blog might also allow your users to reach you if this happens again.

Good idea, we’ll think of that.

Email definitely would work in these types of situations. As I could not get to the site from numerous locations, I had no idea what the problem was. If I had received an email from you folks, I would have been much happier.
