Greasemonkey Script

Tuesday, March 28th, 2006

With the deployment of version 0.4 we made some changes to our internal code structure of the bookmarklet. Although we tried to ensure that the interface to the outside world, e.g. the greasemonkey script from ecmanaut, stays the same, we seem to have made some critical changes nonetheless.

Fortunately, ecmanaut already updated his greasemonkey script to make sure it also runs with the new version of the bookmarklet code. Thus, all users using the script are now advised to update their script to make it work smoothly again.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

DNS Problems (Now Solved)

Friday, March 24th, 2006

We currently face massive DNS problems to www.cocomment.com. We are currently hosting our DNS as joker.com and they issued the following statement

Joker.com currently experiences massive distributed denial of service attacks against nameservers.
This affects DNS resolution of Joker.com itself, and also domains which make use of Joker.com nameservers.
We are very sorry for this issue, but we are working hard for a permanent solution.
Thank you for your understanding.

Unfortunately, we are also affected by this and cocomment.com is thus often not reachable from various locations. We are currently trying to move our DNS to another hoster, but that unfortunately takes time and as joker is quite busy it’s probably even harder than usual.

We are really sorry about this and apologize for any inconvenience you encounter. We hope the situation goes back to normal soon.

(The problems are now solved and we should not have these problems any more).

Version 0.4 online

Wednesday, March 22nd, 2006

We just deployed version 0.4 (aka ‘Jegi’s Work’) of cocomment.

The new version bring many small bug fixes, but we also have two interesting new features.

First there is now a privacy feature. In your account page you can now hide yourself, or better your virtual identity from others. You can remove yourself from top user list or recent cloud or you can hide ‘Your conversations’ completely from others. Or just disable the blog box or the RSS feed.

The other important new feature allows to ‘pimp your blog’ even more. You now have a small box showing the top (co)users on your blog and a box with the top (co)tags. Both of these boxes can be added to your blog just as the current blog box.

(co)Users (co)Tags

We also added an RSS feed to the current blog box that is configured just as the blog box is. This now allows you to tailor the RSS feed to your own desires.
At the same time we also made some slight adjustments to how the blog box is displayed. Although we tried to ensure that it still looks as similar as before, it might now look a bit different, depending on your adjustments. We are sorry about any inconvenience this might make. If you have problems, please use the forum.

Another small thing to note, we changed the RSS and the blog box to now link to the original posts and blogs instead of linking back to coComment. We think this is more logical and fairer than the previous solution. I hope this matches with your opinion.

Now, no more talk, have fun with coComment and its new features. As always, if you find any bugs (very unlikely… ;-) ), let us know.

Maintenance completed

Thursday, March 16th, 2006

The server is now up again.
If you encounter any problems, please let us know.
We are sorry for the inconveniences because of the downtime.

Server Maintenance

Wednesday, March 15th, 2006

As you might have noticed already, we have some performance problems from time to time. The problem is not too easy to track down, but we found some issues that might help to improve the situation.
To be able to implement the changes, we have to shut down the server for a short period of time. We have planned to do the update tomorrow, Thursday the 16th of March at 8:00 CET (our time here in Bern, that’s 06:00 New York == 01:00 to 03:00 Los Angeles == 18:00 to 20:00 Tokyo). We hope we don’t need the full two hours, but you never know.

We apologize for this inconvenience.

Digg!

Tuesday, March 7th, 2006

Just a quick message to let you know that we added Digg support. Maybe I should do a digg story to announce that ;-)

Tags and other new features!

Monday, March 6th, 2006

As promised, we’ve been busy working on a number of issues to help improve coComment. While we’ll never be finished with this, we thought it was a good time to bring out the latest stuff we’ve been working on.
What we’ve added:

TAGS

Tags will help you organize your comments and conversations more efficiently. By tagging your comments with the term(s) of your choice when you submit a comment, you’ll be able to easily follow all resulting comments and conversations under that tag. On the ‘Your conversation’ page, you can see all tags you’ve entered. Simply click on these tags to view all related conversations.

Add tags to your comments

The tagging process is very simple. When submitting a comment, [1] click on the coComment button as you usually would. This will bring up the coComment popup, where you can [2] enter whatever tag(s) you like in the “tags” field. [3] Click the ‘ok’ button and [4] submit your comment as usual.

More RSS feeds

Now every article and blog has also its own RSS feed.
On the ‘Your conversations’ page, there are now two feeds:

  • Conversation - use this to get an RSS feed tracking all conversations related to comments you have made.
  • Comments - a highly requested feature from coComment users - allows you to follow only comments made by a specific user/blogger.

MISC

WHAT’S NEXT:

We’re still working on a number of things like…

  • conversation crawling - to let you follow all conversations, not just those made by coComment users
  • browser extension - to completely eliminate the need to click on the bookmarklet when submitting a comment
  • privacy features - to allow you to remain fully anonymous when you prefer
  • spell checking - to make sure your comments are as perfect as possible!
  • blog integration - to add lots of cool functionalities around your comments… (we won’t say what exactly, but we’re sure you’ll like them!)

Thanks again for using coComment, and please contact us in the forum with your feedback on the latest features!
