New Version Deployed (0.3d)

February 14th, 2006

We just deployed a new version onto our productive system.

The main feature that was added to the system right now is a new design of the bookmarklet and how you use it. It looks much nicer now (I hope you like it). And we also added some new features. First, by pressing on the coComment icon on the page you can see what values have been extracted by coComment. If you think they are wrong, you now have the option to change them.

Additional, if you forgot to click the bookmarklet (as I often do, so I think the option was added just for me :-) ), you now can select the comment you just made and click on the bookmarklet to store the selected text in coComment.

We also made quite some bug fixes. MySpace and MSN should now work better, although MySpace does still not work at all if you are using Internet Explorer. Furthermore, we have made a change to get rid of the ‘(untitled)’ problems. Before, if you adjusted your blog to correctly extract the title of article and the blog, they titles did still not appear correctly in coComment if ‘(untitled)’ articles were already present. That should now be adjusted when a new, correct comment is made. Thus, if your blog is showing up as untitled, try to submit another comment and see if it fixes the prloblem.

Have fun with the new version and tell us what you think (or what does not work…).

And of course I forgot something important. We added native support for coComment to our own blog. Thus, if you are logged into coComment, you don’t need to press the bookmarklet and all your comments here are automatically stored in coComment.

  2. Pablo Says:

It appears this new version also messed up AJAX commenting, when I have AJAX commenting enabled on my site the comments do not appear on coComment.

  3. Brian Benzinger Says:

Wow. This looks fantastic! I went to a blog and looked at the bottom and saw the coComment icon (because the Greasemonkey script auto started it for me) and at first impression, I thought - wow… someone has added styles to their blog to make the coComment icon look different. Hah. Then I clicked on the icon and went, “Wow. That is slick.” :) Great work again guys. Looks excellent and love how you can now add values in the options panel before submitting the comment. Awesome.

  4. Patrice Says:

Amazing work you have done. The new bookmarklet is a dream. I like the new feature where it automatically asks users to add the information if the blog software is not known.

    Keep it up!

  5. computerjoe Says:

    Well done!

  6. ignazio Says:

Thank you so much for the new improvements!
    I’m really impressed!
    :)

  7. mgm Says:

Very nice. The blogbox integration doesn’t seem to be working though, I don’t see my cocomments on my blog any longer.

  8. linickx Says:

the new bookmarklet is cool - thanks :-)

  9. CetaMac Says:

Thank you, and how about keep making advantage for this blue elf ? And I posted some suggestion on the forum too.

  10. CetaMac Says:

mgm, I met the same problem.
And I think it may be more painful for me, I almost stop updating my blog directly on blogger. instead, I update it by tracking my comments, then present on the integration. If it fail to be loaded, my blog will be forgotten soon.

Man, this is just getting better and better! Keep up the good work.
Would love to see you guys talk to TypePad about them including this as a default!

It’s not work when using Ajax comment in my WordPress blog (http://blog.tinyau.net). In the previous version of bookmarklet, although the dialog box “Submitting comment to …” will not disappear after submitted the comment, the comment can still be captured in coComment.

  14. mgm Says:

CetaMac, I’m sorry to see your content is not being updated. I keep my coco blogbox in the sidebar so the issue is definitely not impacting me as much as it has impacted you. I feel for you, I hope they get it worked out soon!

  15. Merlin Says:

Actually, we did not make any changes to the blog box that I know of. But we will look at the issues today and fix it. Sorry about the problems.
I thought we had problems with AJAX commenting before, but if thats worse now, please point me to some example blogs where I can check this out. Maybe there is a way around this.

  16. tinyau Says:

Merlin, my blog (http://blog.tinyau.net) and ZEO’s blog (http://zeo.unic.net.my) are using Ajax comment under WordPress platform. Although you’ve said that you can reach my blog that might due to proxy server problem, I think you can reach ZEO’s one.

  17. hilti Says:

Blog box is back. Hope it works now for all of you. If you still have problems let us know. Sorry for inconvenience.

  18. mgm Says:

Blogbox is definitely back! Thanks guys, good work. It’s showing up again with no more problems. Looks like there is a blogbox on CetaMac’s sidebar now too!

  19. CetaMac Says:

mgm, yes it works again, thank you.

  20. djchuang Says:

The new look icon and the settable options is incredible! What I couldn’t quite figure out is how to add a coComment for those (few) occasions when I forget to click on the coComment button. I tried following your description to highlight/select the comment that I had already posted, and click on the coComment bookmarklet - but nothing seemed to happen. And I even reinstalled the bookmarklet, and nothing happened. Help?

  21. CarLBanks Says:

I also still have the issue djchuang.

  22. Patrice Says:

@djchuang: I have added comments after posting them a few times already. It works great for me. Maybe it’s a browser issue? I use Firefox 1.5.0.1 on Mac OS X.

  23. Mocha Says:

@ djchuang and CarLBanks: Note that right now this only works when you select the text *before* you click the bookmarklet. Try reloading the page, selecting the text and then clicking the bookmarklet. If this still down’t work, can you tell me which OS/browser you are using and point me to the URL where you are trying this?

  24. Patrice Says:

@Mocha: I’ve now got the same problem. Firefox 1.5.0.1 on OS X. The page where it doesn’t work is http://www.artofmission.com/articles/2006/02/15/review-pragmatic-version-control-using-subversion

I also tried submitting the comment to coComment before posting it, but that didn’t work either.

  25. Mocha Says:

Actually, I just noticed that it isn’t working here on the teamblog, probably because there is currently a conflict with the native support that was added to this blog. So, did you just test this here?

  26. Mocha Says:

@Patrice… Hmm, it’s working there for me in both Safari and Firefox 1.5.0.1 on OSX:

  27. Patrice Says:

@Mocha: Thank you for taking the time to look into this. I found the culprit now. When I deactivate the Greasemonkey script for coComment it works.

  28. Mocha Says:

Yes, sorry for not mentioning that. The thought that the greasemonkey script might interfere with this had actually crossed my mind. It’s basically the same as the problem here on the teamblog, since both this blog and the greasmonkey script kind of automatically “click the bookmarklet” as soon as the page loads - so you never have a chance to select any text before the bookmarklet code runs. I’ll look into this tomorrow.

  29. USC Trojan Says:

Are you planning to push the feature to make one or more of my conversations private? Or easier still, to make my conversations page private or public? I have paused using cocomment till that feature becomes available.

  30. ecmanaut Says:

Nicely styled window. Why not generalize the code that draws them it a bit and reuse it, instead of the remaining few alerts() in the bookmarklet?

  31. Merlin Says:

Good point, ecmanaut. It might be worth it, and should not be too hard.
USC Trojan, the private thing is in the pipeline, can’t tell you a release date yet, though. We have to nail down some of the details first. But it will come quite soon.

  32. USCTrojan Says:

    Merlin:

Thanks, will be checking your blog :-)

  33. Ric Says:

The last few ‘cocomments’ have come up with a popup asking me to confirm the blog post I am commenting on - which requires manually entering details about the page I’m on, which should already be known to the bookmarklet. This is on blogs that I have cocommented on several times in the last week (example: http://thingamy.typepad.com/sigs_blog/2006/02/mergers_acquisi.html

Why is this happening - it’s a real pain in the butt! If I have to do this for every cocomment I make I won’t be having as much fun as I have been.

  34. Merlin Says:

Sorry about that Ric. It was a (fortunately) temporary bug in our system. I’m really sorry about that….

Especially since my girlfriend had to drive me into the office at 1:20 in the morning to fix the bug…

I hope it works again. If not, please let us know.

  35. Ric Says:

Merlin - thanks for the rapid fix - the next day it was all fine. Apologise to the girlfriend for me (but she’s probably getting used to strange working hours by now!)

  36. MooMoo Says:

I got to check out if this Autocomment really works
